Anyone know where to get checkering done?

    Hi all,

As per title really, not worried if it's done by hand or laser, I want some skip line checkering done.

So does anyone know where is a good place to get it done please?

    Cheers

It's a dying art sadly, most is done by laser nowadays and therefore at the creation stage of mass produced stocks. I've not done any for a while so wouldn't be confident in doing anything on someone else's rifle.
You could try Shaun at ISP but it depends how much work he's got on.

    All the best, Craig.

I know what you mean by how hard it is too do, I bought a few cutters at the beginning of the year and thought "how hard can it be", well it turns out it's bloody hard, even on a nice smooth flat piece of wood the cutters don't go where you want them too.

I have googled it and a couple have come up, so I'll see how much they charge.

I have one of James's walnut stocks. Nice bit of work, although this one isn't chequered.

The last time I looked into having some chequering done the prices quoted started at £75 per panel depending on the complexity and size, so realistically for the stock grip and fore end it's not going to be cheap.
I ended up stippling the stock myself

Well James has come back to me with a pretty good price for four panels of skip line checkering, just got to get things sorted out now.

    Cheers

not here... I made a flat top checkering tool yesterday with a view to cleaning up some checkering on my shotgun.. the borders went well, then I almost ballsed up the forend panel.. I decided to give it a miss. very tricky, or was it my tool? yes - it was the tools!!

Don't worry, you're not alone, I bought a big pile of cutters with the intention of great things but it's bloody hard, I know it takes years of practice to master but it's a bit soul destroying when you can hardly do a straight line let alone a series of them together, it didn't help my bad back either having to hunch over the stock, I kept a single line cutter when I sold all the bits off and it's hands for cleaning up existing checkering if it's got a bit damaged.
