Gareth my understanding is that the Venom stocks as well as Theoben stocks were in fact made by Custom Stocks of Sheffield. In the early days they certainly used 'better' wood than they do today.Originally Posted by Gareth W-B

I like customstocks stuff and have a CS800 on one of my 97's, which I'm happy with, albeit the grain on mine is decent rather than spectacular because it wasn't a graded piece of wood.
I've got no connection with this fella (Andy Dyer) but spotted a write up on him in one of the mags recently and very tempted to give him a go for a full rosewood stock for one of my older 80's if the ergonomic side is as nice as the looks.

Make that 3. Basically the same stock John Darling had on his 80 when I was a lad reading Airgunner. Put me down for one please. I did try a CS500 but it was just a bit too heavy handed/ numb for me.

The action was done by John Bowkett but he doesn't recall who did the stock.

That's the same stock I had on my 80 lazerglide, it was the venom hunter stock, the complete gun was £360 back around 1988, it was the best gun I've ever owned and I would pay handsomely to have it back, I do believe it was a Custom Stocks, but they were English walnut instead of American which is what they use now, it just looked so right fitted to an 80

Very unlikely to be English walnut. Apparently even the high end shotgun manufacturers have been using continental and Turkish walnut for some time now.

I agree with you. The nicest CS stocks are the older ones anyway and once 'improved' by Venom and others they are really good. They used better wood than even the best of the current offerings. That being said they are very cheap compared with the specialist stock makers like Gary Cane. We can't have it all unfortunately.

I'd like to see one of these AKD stocks. Not sure how rosewood would handle. Lovely to look at without a doubt but I've no idea how the weight distribution would make it feel. They certainly look very pretty and are reasonably priced..

I wouldn't even mind the quality of the wood to some degree, but there is only one decent priced non thumb hole stock out there. Which I don't particularly like. I think CS could do a good trade out of it and it's fairly similar anyway. A CS 550?

Overall Custom Stocks have been providing a great service for us for 30 years or so. I'm glad they're still in business !
Its true that the stocks they manufactured say in the Nineties were on the whole better quality but they still make really attractive, functional air rifle stocks to a good standard. This is probably down to the sourcing of the timber at that time, much of that cannot now be used as is classed as Exotic Hardwood, Hyedua is a prime example but CS's machining standards and QC are just as good as ever IMO !
Its true, there are some brilliant gifted stock manufactures out there producing bespoke stocks and good luck to them, we need them as much as the "big boys".
However I sincerly hope CS continue to make their stocks for a good time yet, I for one will continue to use them !

The service is great as is the quality and price which is why I would love to use them. Just wish there was a slightly more refined sporter shape. They haven't got back to my message yet so I may just phone tomorrow and see if the idea has any legs at all.

Would be ideal.
A bit sleeker than a cs500 at the front and a bit less angular with a lower cheek piece at the rear.
