Were was my scope made ?

I've got an oldish (I think) gloss Nikko Stirling 6x40 WA Gold Crown scope. I have looked this over very very carefully and can't see a country of manufacture. Any ideas were these were made ? I know it's hard to find were some scopes have been marked, but this one has me baffled.

Tricky one Dave, your scope goes back to a time when the country of manufacture was shown on small circular stickers and not generally stamped into the tube or body.
Could be Japanese before manufacture was transferred to China ?

The old gloss ones are usually Japanese made.

Funnily enough, I just dug out a new / boxed but unused gloss Nikko 1.5x20 pistol scope and it says on mine made in Japan

A few years back I had an old gloss scope that came on my first PCP, purely by chance I found the "made in" tiny black letters (maybe 3mm) printed on a black background only visible at a certain angle with a bright light or direct sunlight on the optic bell.

I have possibly the exact same scope. It's got a matte finish. Box says Made in Korea.

    Without access to pics:

It has a one piece body.
The eye bell doesn't have a fast focus ring like most modern scopes, but the whole bell screws and there is a seperate locking ring.

Nice and clear scope (greenish lenses) and pretty solidly built too.

I have a similar gloss NS scope.

Under the saddle of mine, engraved on a 'flange' in the tiniest
print, is the single word 'KOREA'.

Perhaps worth checking again under good (oblique) light, and
with the aid of a magnifier?

Absolutely nothing. I do however have a couple of period Appollo scopes with Korea in the place you mention.

I was going to say probably Korea, as I have a same-period NS Gold scope and that's what it says on the box. Very decent quality, I would say Jap equivalent.

I recently picked up an old gloss Gold Crown 4x40WA.

I don't know where it was made (no indication on the scope) but it is good glass and compares well to 1980s scopes I own that are definitely Japanese.

Somewhere in one of the cabs I have a "sort of a Tomahawk" with an older NS 6x42 scope with a 30mm tube, I'll dig it out and report back on its country of birth !
