How to remove the finish and stain from chequering panels on a stock??

    Hi Guys,
I am refinishing a stock but don't know if i will be able to remove both the laquer and the stain (colour) from the chequered panels. If i can only remove the finish and not the colour then i will have to stain it the same colour as it was before, which will be OK, but it would be nice to try a lighter colour.

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

There's a thin version of Nitromors that works with the toothbrush, but be careful not to soften the chequering too much. It should take out the stain as well.

    Brass Brush and Solvent

The solvent I have used with success is 50% Methyl Hydrate, 50% Lacquer Thinner.
CAUTION, the Lacquer Thinner will dissolve plastic brush handles.
I use a fine, soft brass brush with a wooden handle to clean the grooves and blot up as I go with a clean cotton cloth.
If the stain is water based, it will not be removed.
If the stain is solvent or oil based, some may be removed.

i used it to polish my bar and pool cue.
can tell you want quick, but patience will prevail.

the nylon threads are so fine they take on the shape.

Nitromoors and a pressure washer, the only way I know to get varnish out of chequering with zero damage, apart from a bit of whiskering maybe

    Hi Guys,
I bought some of the thin nitromoors it's called master craftsman and used it to good effect. It removed the laquer and most of the stain. A tooth brush is not up to the job of removing all the sludge from the chequering though, so i used a very small brass wire brush and it really scraped all the grooves nice and clean.

    Cheers,

    Steve.
