    Devastated !!!

I have just been told that it's unlikely that I'm going to be granted and Airgun Licence.

I have been shooting airguns since 12 years old and my only interests are shooting and vermin control. I have several permissions which I look after regularly.

Never had any problems with the police and always rang them before leaving to let them know where and when I was going out.

The reason given, As a Diabetic with "Hypo Unawareness "
Absolutely shattered. Is an understatement !

    A quick Google:

"Hypo unawareness can be common in people who have had diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, for a number of years."

So have they asked for your driving license, a more dangerous weapon that a gun?

Have you had a history of this and more importantly recorded with your GP?

I think you have a good case to appeal, don't sit back and take it.

    Appeal

First time I have ever heard that Diabetes can cost you a Licence / any Licence . Even driving a car , they test you every so many years by getting Doctor to okay you / eyesight test etc .
Is there any Fac users here ?
Can illness ie sickness be a valid reason to disqualify someone ?
The Airgun Licence from what I have read is on paper similar to but cannot actually be anything like a real cert ..you guys don't even record serial numbers ? Right ?
    First off - APPEAL .
You have them by the ear then also :
    - Write a complaint to your local MP , and also
    - the Disabilities MP for your government .

If they are treating you as disabled then you've got rights .

If all else fails , you should still be able to shoot - at a Club ? I seem to remember seeing that some people will still be allowed to play airgun and have no personal licence - ie range shooting / Club ?

    Hang in there mate .

Appeal and fight it to the bitter end mate. Try and get in touch with Sturgeon and tell her straight that you are being discriminated against. Good luck. Derek

Losing your driving licence tends to come after needing help to manage hypos. The thinking is that if you can't recognise the fall in sugars that leads to a hypo then you become a risk behind the wheel, I assume the same thinking is being used in relation to the firearms licence here.

When your brain is starved of food (sugar) it can do odd things and individuals respond differently, someone suffering a hypo can appear drunk and drive like one, become violent and irrational or they can simply loose consciousness or have any number of odd responses. I can clearly remember chasing a chap around a recycling centre while he skipped around giggling like a girl with his blood glucose level of 1.2mmol. My own son (type 1 for 7 years) can function sensibly at less than 1.0mmol, whereas I've met others that struggle to function below 10mmol due to the way they have managed their diabetes over the years, everyone is different.

I've also been punched and bitten by people having hypos, there's no malice involved, it is simply the way that individual responds to that low sugar level. At that point in their lives I wouldn't feel too happy about handing them their car keys or a rifle.

That said, if a diabetic patient manages their condition well, which their GP will evidence with stable HbA1c records and lack of related admissions/999 attendances then there is no concern and no real reason why they shouldn't drive/shoot etc. I suspect the answer to the OP's issue at the moment will lie with his/her GP and Diabetes Specialist.

My driving license was revoked 3 years ago ! I'm awaiting a transplant as my diabetes is going to cause death within 5 years if I don't have the transplant. I don't fit, I just shut down unconscious.
That said I don'the hypo that often and am fitted with an alarm that bleeps if I go low or high. It works great and has solved a serious problem with my health.
Sadly the DVLA don't recognise this new technology.

Sorry to hear that, are you on the list for just a pancreas or going for the double with a kidney too?

Pancreas kidneys are OK I think.
This is really put me on a downer.
I normally go out about 4/5 times a week as a minimum.

Didn't think the new law would effect me.

The inevitable outcome of stupid law making and blind bureaucracy.

SNP jobsworths making life even more unpleasant for ordinary people.

You can thank the Blair creature.

I feel very sorry for you.

my brother lost his driving license due to it.

the meter he uses said he had not taken 2 readings a day when he had, suspected faulty meter.

he was unwell and had a hypo. taken into hospital. and next thing the license was gone after a doctor he had never seen before wrote a report rather than the diabetes clinic that see him .

I hope Tonka that you get a an appeal and win.
