HW70 blackarrow (if u wanna add a red dot etc, or standard if you prefer open sites) ? Nice traditional pistol, not overly expensive, shoots well - much easier than the 45 to handle....

    FWB 65/80?
Given the OP's specification that would have been my suggestion too.

If price is a consideration, then an HW40...

HW45- spent most of my youth lusting after one. Amazing pistol in theory. In practice its a bit soulless somehow.
Tempest- Looks fantastic, is fantastic, great to pick up and shoot
Scorpion- The daddy. Great with a shoulder stock. Great fun. Put a red dot on it. I'd be tempted by a .22 for this one.

Best bet is to get all three. If you can't stretch to that then just get the last two- you wont regret it!

Its all dependent on what you want the pistol for. If its tin can bashing than more or less anything will do. That depends on what you feel happy and comfortable with.
If its accuracy you are after for 10m paper punching, without breaking the bank, then something like a s/h FAS, Compact, HW40/75 (no wood on the '40), Original 6 or 10 (Giss) or, as I suggest a FWB 65/80. Perhaps it would be a good idea to visit your local airgun club and try a variety of pistols.

Thanks all. Plenty to be looking out for there.

The "wood" stipulation was more to avoid having brown, wood-like plastic than to avoid plastic altogether.

with one exception maybe.....take a look at the brown grip walther 53....not only do they work better on this pistol than black or wood but might just be the best ever set of sports grips on a pistol save for the fact they are not ambi....maybe thats what makes them so good provide you are right handed of course...
never come across a lefty 53 in all my puff

I know you don't want anything "replica-y", but I don't know if that means you dont want something of a military aspect?

How about a Special Ops Tactical Flat Earth Gat?!

    LOL.

Seriously, early wood grip Diana LP5 seems to me to fit the bill perfectly. Fairly powerful, accurate, well made.....
