Looking for a piccy of the leather washer end of the pistonfor pre war BSA underlever

it's actually for an "L". The leather is a bit "gooey", so I think I might need to make or buy a replacement. But any tips on cleaing it out (i'm thinking isi alchohol or white spirit) welcome - but I'm worried that it'll just crumble.

I'm looking for a piccy of the business end of the piston, showing the mounting, profile, etc. I'm not sure mine is an original mounting. I might just stick an o-ring nose in there, or a Diana 28mm parachute seal, and sleeve the TP down. But I'd like an original option too before you all try to burn me at the stake...

    Thanks in advance,
    JB

If your light pattern is a 1920's one with a serial number before 30,000 ish, it should have a leather cup washer, together with a thicker leather inner washer and a brass shallow cup washer that the head of the steel machine screw fits in. All that screws into a hole on the front of the piston ( in this case the leather cup washer has a small central hole in it), however if it has the later piston washer assembly, the leather piston washer has the large hole in it, and that goes over the exposed end of the central piston rod. this is then held on by a circular nut, which screws onto the end of the piston rod. The circular nut has two small holes drilled into the front, so that a pin spanner can be used to unscrew it.

    Regards

    Cheers Lakey...

Mine is older, two hole trigger, 16,xxxx serial. defo just has a single screw hole in the face of the piston, but what's on there right now is defo non original, as I suspected. No big deal as it's quite well done, but the leather washer is just toast.

On mine what would be the inner washer + plus metal dish, is in fact a single solid metal bush, with countersink in the centre for the retaining screw. In principal it would be fine, but I think the OD of the bush is too large, leaving the "lip" of the leather outer seal too thin, hence it's degredation.

    Thanks again, clarifies things nicely...
