    Bit of advice please

    Evenin' all

I've been thinking about having a go at 10m air rifle targets for a while now seeing as we have an air range at my rifle club but been put off cos my R10 is a bit heavy, lol.

I've just acquired a Webley eclipse in .177 flavour with iron sights and wondered if you experienced shooters thought it would be suitable to give me a taste of the discipline or if it's so far removed it won't be anything like it.......

    Cheers in advance

If it's just a bit of fun and your not intending to get into target shooting seriously then there's no problem in using the Webley to have a go, although it's not a target rifle and the iron sights I'm presuming are not dioptre sights which are more suitable for 10m air rifle. The club may also have an issue with the power depending on the robustness of the pellet catchers! I would therefore ask first.

Does the club have any guns you can use? If so you should try these as they will be more likely to be dedicated recoilless target rifles. The only problem for you might be the weight as adult 10m target rifles will be around 2 lbs heavier than your R10 and scope. The technique you use however is important and with your elbow tucked in it should make the target gun easier to support with practice.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realise target guns were that heavy, lol.

It's a live fire rifle club with a 10m air range for us to shoot pistol but fancy a crack at rifle. No club guns to try and I'll be the first trying rifle 😬

I know the pellet catchers are up to the job so no worries there, and yeah it has standard iron sights not diopter.....

If you just want a plink and a bit of fun then OK, but realistically you struck the nail clean on the head with your last statement, it is so far removed that you will not even get an idea of the discipline. If you just try with a sporting rifle you will be turned off quickly in the belief that it is impossible, and in a club with no experience or coaching you will learn nothing.

10 mt Air rifle is very specialised and so are the rifles, it is very demanding, highly technical and totaly addictive when you learn correctly, if you start correctly you will be hooked, and will want to learn and develop, the ten is 0.5 mm across and to be competitive you must frighten it a lot!

I spend a lot of time coaching 10mt Rifle, from beginners, up to elite level, the best advice I can give you is to find a local club that shoots it properly and go visit them. You are in Kent, I believe there always used to be an active club in Ashford.

    Good shooting and good luck

    Thanks for the comments.

Last time I "fancied a crack" at something it was target pistol this time last year picking up a well used FWB65 from here and I'm now hooked , having come second in my division last summer in a postal comp and leading my division atm ( having gone up 2 or 3 ) lol, so could be dangerous for me trying rifle. haha

maybe I'll see about chopping the eclipse in for a basic/cheapish ( if such a thing exists....) target rifle and see how I go.

    10 mt

The best route to starting is through a 10 mt club. 99% of people who buy a gun before starting, or from internet advice get the wrong thing! First look for a club that shoots 10 mt match rifle.

Or perhaps come and see it being shot at a high level? The English (ESSU) Championships are at Bisley 29th/30th April at Bisley, free spectator entry, its an easy drive for you. We shall be there on Saturday the 29th working with a young lady shooting in the Ladies event, the detail starts 9.00 am, you can come along, see what its all about, see top level shooting, we would be happy to talk you through what is happening, and suggest some routes you could consider to get started.

    Have Fun,
    Robin

The robustness of the 10m airgun target catcher is a VERY serious point.

ALL 'proper' German/Austrian and Italian-made ISSF 10m air rifles are limited to 6 ft lbs m/e. Your air rifle may well turn out almost double this.

Please check it out before using it on a 10m range.
