Improving the look of an old gun?

    Hi all
My father-in-law has an old BSA Airsporter - nothing special and very old.
It has most of the blueing in place but there is a little bit of rust showing on one side.
Can anyone advise the best way to address this? (Within reason considering age & value)
I don't want to do a full strip and send off to a pro bluing company as the rifle is probably worth 50-80 quid but getting it to look a little better would put a smile on F-I-Ls face so some effort on my part would be worth it.

    Any feedback greatly received.
    Cheers Danny

0000 guage wire wool and some oil.. pretty much any kind of oil will do...it's just to soften up the rust spots... not wd40!
Give it a light rub for 5 minutes and wipe clean, oil and repeat the next day..and so on until rust is gone.

Might also be worth a brush of a cold blueing chemical like Tetra Blue.

G96 blue will give good results if you follow the instructions.

What the three Guys said above. It wont eliminate pitting (if there is any) but after the bluing treatment, it'll look like "delicate scratches on fine leather" which personally I think is befitting of a nice vintage air rifle like the Airsporter and adds to its character !

I recently did the same for my father in law for his 60th. I knew he had one when he was young, and I picked up a cheap Mk6 at an auction. Didn't reblue it, just polished the pants off of it, sanded the stock back and gave it 6 coats of danish oil. It's not finished completely, but it's almost done:

Older airsporters are quite nice and desirable so I would suggest you seek some advice and a valuation on the collectors section.

    Thats true.
If the tap opens when you cock it that means its a MK1 or 2 and could be worth a bit more than you think.

    Thanks Chaps
I'll investigate the cold blue and check the tap.
    Much appreciated.

I've just been a little bit sick. Looks like it needs a blood transfusion.
The South of England has 2 good things, the M1 and the A1. Both will take you to Yorkshire.
