    Polygonal barrel

Has any one had experience of the LW polygonal barrel in .177 or any calibre for that matter, i fancy something different.

I'm sure these came up a few years ago (while smooth-twist was touted as the greatest firearms inventions..etc. etc.)
I believe they were only found to be viable for FAC power levels and didn't really do much an the sub 12 range.

I'm not fortunate enough to own an original LG300 which used one of these, so perhaps someone will correct me

I'm fairly sure my JW60 had one of these after John converted it from .22 to .177 for me. It certainly was outstandingly accurate and consistent but I'd be hard pushed to say if this would be any different to having a conventionally rifled barrel on the same gun. I'm sure John would have used LW for good reason.

tried one on my TX years ago and it was inferior to the std offering...
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.

I think they tend to work better in fac, the extra oomph seats the skirt better, less pellet deformation, less friction, more power.

The late Mike Wright had a polygonal barrel on one of his Whiscombes, so was able to compare its accuracy with conventional rifled barrels, and the difference was due to the twist rate.

The polygonal barrel proved the more accurate beyond 50 or so yards, the rifled barrel at 50 yards and less.

Its fascinating that so much significance is placed on twist rates in powder guns yet so little work seems to be done with airguns?

As an example a 50 grain .22 rifle bullets would normally have a 1/12 or 1/14 twist yet a 70 or 80 grain .22 bullet would be 1/8 or 1/7 all other factors being equal.... 50% more projectile weight makes a massive difference yet airgun projectiles vary at least that much yet the barrels are all the same?

Come on Jim work to be done

This list show riffled and polygonal barrel for sale, they almost all have 450mm twist does that mean 1 full turn for every 450mm of barrel or 20 degrees/inch.
http://lothar-walther.de/166.php this list is for cartridge guns and as said earlier they all differ,

I think my next 22 fac barrel will be a poly, don't think I will bother in sub 12 though.

My CZ527 .223 has a polygonal barrel, it works a treat but not sure if the same could be said for 12ftlbs barrel. Be interesting to find out though!
