Thing is, I don't know if they're from the reloaded Hornady ammo or the once fired new Hornady cases.
Has happened to many of my Hornady brass with 10.8 grains of N120. Had a primer blow and it's a loud and scary business. Luckily I was wearing sunglasses at the time because there was debris. Hornady brass is giving a lot of problems with loose primers after a few shots so much so that I have abandoned them and using S&B brass. After several reload the S&B primer pockets are still tight and getting good neck tension. Going to test some reformed Remington 22 Hornet brass see how accurate they are.

Just had a quick look at old notes and 5 shot groups averaged 0.75" at 100 yards. 10.2gn Vit N110 giving average 3650fps. This was from 17 Hornady brass, I seem to remember that fireforming 22 PRVI brass wasn't too far off this.
With Murom primers the load worked out at under 16 pence per shot.

I mainly load 20g vmax at about 3650 fps with IMR 4227 with a deverstating results out to 250 yards

So I will have to give them a go

The 20gn Vmax is awful in my rifle and the 17gn Vmax shoots much better.
Damage is pretty horrific really, I hit two young rabbits at about 170 yards and the 'whop' was loud and both were turned inside out. Humane but vicious.

I'm confused now. The only 17 calibre I can find at HK are soft points, of which I bought 500 and found good in my rifle.

The HK 17 cal 17gn £5.50 bullets described as soft points are Hornady Vmax bullets as used in the HMR. The ones I've got have 'gold' coloured poly tips like Remington HMR ammo.

The ones I have from HK are gold with a grey/green tip with a boat tail. They do seem to be plastic though. Can't mark em with a thumbnail.

Saying thank you won't kill you.
I do wish you hadn't said that!

Thank you for what? throwing confusion into the works?

First you tell us that they're Hornady hmr Vmax which are red tips.
Then you tell us that yours have a gold tip which the Remington hmr has.
Then I tell you that mine have a green tip and you say Yup, Hornady!!!!
They're not CCI Vmax either (Black tip)
If you're looking for medals I would get on to Henry Krank and tell them what's what.

As for the primer/case stuff, I haven't had time to digest that properly. At first glance there is some useful info there for which thanks will be apportioned if/when necessary. Credit where it's due has always been important to me. Don't go looking for it everywhere though eh!

    Just to be Mr Picky,
ALL hmr ammo, (with the only exception being Winchester ) is made in the same factory by CCI Speer,
The colour of the tip has no real meaning ...
Vmax , Amax, Zmax are all Hornady licensed products, They own the design patent on that bullet ( head).
Also, I don't know of any commercially available 17gr .17 bullets on the market other than for the hmr, likewise other than Kranks, I have not come across these elsewhere And Krank sell these as unbranded.
I don't think you will find any load data on these size ' heads' ( bullets ) for the .17 Hornet..
But a good start would be with a known load on a 20gr & back off slightly , then run over a Chrono & do all the usual pressure checks : stiff bolt, measure web on case ( before & after ) , visually inspect case after each shot, ect ......

Good find & good info , Guesty

    Good info gents as always.

I've been through to Krankys today and picked some of the 17 's up they have plenty and willing to post so they told me and tree top is right I have shot hornady hmr for years and over the years the Colour of the tips have changed from red / orange and others.
    Regards

That's my sig file implemented as of yesterday and not directed at you in any way.
Usually people don't respond or even acknowledge assistance and I got so fed up with it that I had virtually stopped posting. That note is just a general request to show manners which has been declining steadily on this and other forums over the years. I've not used a sig file before so I was hoping that it would have been away from my post, or under a line or something.
We were getting on just fine with a good exchange of information, and I'm happy to continue if you are?
All of these bullets are made by Hornady, including the non red tipped ones. They make gold ones for Remington, black for Federal, red for their own brand etc etc.
I'm happy to share any info with you, or anyone else who responds, so I hope your nose isn't out of joint.

Thanks for that Guesty. (see what I did there?)

I go out of my way to help people all the time, it's the way I'm made. I started using forums many years ago because of the lack of commercialism and vested interest and the place to get a straight answer. Forums are different these days. There seems to be a growing trend toward people who are compelled to post even though it's based on something they read or he said/she said rather that first hand experience. Too often someone will ask for information and get philosophy in return.

I love to learn and welcome any and all help I can get. I'm liking this reloading thing and looking forward to the time when all the kinks are ironed out and I get the chrony out and do things properly.

Another thing that makes me cynical is my own instinct which is very good. It took me many years to trust that instinct rather than some of the "help" I've been given over the years. My primer question is a case in point. I had one loose unfired primer amongst 150. All my fired brass goes in the chamber with no effort. The first time I used the rifle I found the cases had a vague ring about 5/16ths above the rim. I posted and had three or four people tell me that was normal. I've fired that brass again since and all's well except for one loose primer. I've tried measuring the cases and I seem to get a dicrepancy of more 0.001 just by turning any particular case around in my hand. Now do I get anal (and I mean no disrepect to those who do. Each to his own) or do I trust my instinct?

Incidently, for what it's worth I've been shooting the HKs 17gr with the same 9gr of LilGun with good effect but no chrono yet.

I do take in what people are saying and I will endeavour to get different powders but my nearest is an hour away and he doesn't stock all of em.
