I'm not sure how resilient it will be but as mentioned above using a drinks can is an option, and will be tougher, but more permanently fixed, whereas the tape can be removed easily if need be.
yeah good idea with a cardboard template mate thats what i did on one of mine, cut a few out so have spares, if ever you do use the tin can method, you can stick it down with either blacktac, or double side sticky tape the none foam type, then its just as as to remove as the aluminium tape is. On the 1911A i have suck down the magic9 metal cover down with blacktac, it been on over a year and not moved..
