    Gritty scopes?

One of my scopes feels horribly gritty when adjusting the mag' ring or the front AO.

I'll tell ya what it feels like - It feels just like there's grit in the grease in amongst the threads. And I'm tempted to try washing it out from the outside, with WD40 or white spirit.

    What should I do?

I'm definately not going to attempt taking a scope apart...

No worries Dave. Trouble is, I think I tried washing a gritty mag' ring out years ago (probably with WD40), and I have a feeling that it made the bggr worse.

Try as I might, when I think of you playing with your gritty ring all I get is a mental image of a chimp trying to operate a file-collating photocopier while picking its bum!

Don't regard this as expert testimony, but I'd be concerned about the action of those substances on the O-ring nitrogen seals and their lubrication...

I could be flipant and say off-load Phil but I'd try and have a stab at something constructive.
Never had the problem myself but I would imagine it'll be a "dis-assemble" of some sort as I cant see a "flush out" working.
What scope is it by the way ?

You need to weigh up a repair/service cost with the manufacturer (if possible) and the value of the optic.

I've always used a blower on compressed air to get the crud out of my scopes mag / ao rings.... Works a treat for me... Best method is to cycle the rings in a clockwise and anti clockwise motion with one hand, whilst blowing air under the skirt of the ring using the blower..... You will be surprised what comes out

dip them in vodka. I heard it was a good degreaser

and when you can't hit anything once its back on the rifle you can say its because your scope is still hung over
