Shooting prone

I remember when I was younger and shooting prone was the preferred method for rabbiting. Lie behind a small bunch of nettles, wait for Bugs to make an appearance and break a hat in his bottom!

I gave it a go yesterday, there was a lovely south facing slope with a warren by a cornish hedge. A small patch of gorse barely 30 yards away proving just the right amount of cover.
I assumed the position, raised the gun to check site lines and rolled all the way down the hill!?

Where am I going wrong?

I tend do ambush them also get one or two then wait for them to pop up and get another one or two

i tend to hide behind a large rock on FLAT ground.

maybe you should try laying on flat ground.

I haven't done much hunting/stalking because I'm relatively new to it all but I must admit, perhaps because I'm a lazy Bugger, the whole settling into a sniper position really appeals to me I do love the whole walking miles in circles on a permission too but..... Sniping the quarry suits me (rolling down hill excepted)

the land I shoot is pretty open so sneaking up is difficult in most of the area. so getting into a hidey bit is good. some areas better than others due to activity. I move from one to the other if one gets quiet.

I try to avoid the position in the hunting environment , I've noticed i sometimes shoot a tad high and left from said position . That's with springers and pcps. Just poor technique allied with no natural talent , it's not an issue though .

I have one of those pop-up hides with a built in seat that I use quite regularly. Its a fantastic bit of kit and really comfortable. For some reason I just don't seem to be getting the results I expected.

Maybe the snoring scares the rabbits off?

possibly.

mine is just a large rock ,army kip mat unless the ground is bone dry, my dpm rucksack on the rock for resting the rifle on unless its the .22lr ( bipod on it) or bipod folded and the rucksack for leaning the rifle on.

I tend to get my phone out and check facebook or listen to music and every so often I look to see if anything had popped out.

sometimes they pop up really close either side and I scare them when moving.

Yep yep, used correctly - it's basically a single-point stabiliser.

But the less experienced prone shooter may suffer from a sudden one, which could easily tip you down a hill.

Perhaps that's what happened to you?

You say that in jest but I recon there is some use in a little snooze when hunting, and it actually works a treat for me. Ive tried sneaking into position to try & get the jump on some pigeon loads of times but they always see me even past the beard...(maybe it's the beard they see first im never sure) so I've taken to once in position sitting with my back to the tree and nod off for ten, making sure not to be sat on a red ants nest. When awake all the wildlife has returned. Hooray!
The thing I find funny is, if I stay awake and sit for hours, hardly anything turns up?!
So tactical sleeping does work., I'm sure of it
