    BOING!!

    Evening, peeps.

Managed to get a brief plink in a short while ago.

The sesh was meant to be happening much earlier in the day, but a combination of two meetings at school, stuff to sort in town and the step-daughter descending on us with the two brats wrecked those earlier plans.

Anyways, Monza asked if she could also shoot today. The CZ, which she loves, was a little trickier to get out, so I let her have a go with the twangy Vipermax. She was okay with the weight and cocking effort, but struggled with the scope, a non-AO Hawke Sport HD 4x32, at short range due to focussing issues.

So, I thought I'd treat her with a go on the little Diana 24D. A super-sweet little shooter with crisp trigger. After a short period of re-acclimatisation (she had only had a brief go with a couple of my pistols a couple of months ago and that had been it since the April Bash), she was soon printing some tidy little groups.

I only managed about ten shots with the Gamo and a similar number with the Diana, but it was enjoyable and rewarding talking her through the techniques again and seeing her shooting well.

All being well, she should be at this next Bash!

Did you manage to get to the range today, Pauly?

Glad you got a little plink in Tone. However, time spent taking newbies (particularly young 'un's) through the techniques is very satisfying also. I'm pleased Monza is wanting to attend another Bash particularly as its attended mainly by old geezers. It would be good to see a few more teenagers there. Mind you, they would soon be out-shooting us

Didn't go to the range today, I'm on antibiotics at the moment and they made me feel a bit queasy earlier. Mind you by 16:00 I was fine so I popped over to my little permission for a couple of hours. I brought my S410 with me and just had a little plink at some crab apples lined up on a fence purely for the fresh air and a bit of therapeutic fun. Hopefully make the range on Saturday.

Sorry to hear that you weren't feeling so well earlier, Pauly.

    Hope you're okay.

And great to hear that you managed to get some therapy down at the perm', Pauly.

Like you say, it's always rewarding to get the newbies into it. Such a buzz when they listen. And then start consistently hitting, which brings a big smile to their faces and then they're hooked!

Today, with no further technique talk, just observing, she stuck to all the safety notes from earlier, keeping muzzle in a safe direction, finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, holding the barrel whilst loading etc. And that "target shooting stance" that she developed at that first day at The Bash is still there and she's looking comfortable and natural with it.

As you say, us old timers had better watch out!!

Monza certainly seems to have a very natural shooting stance, reminds me of a young Chris Allum when he shoots a rifle. I don't know if I'm just the wrong shape or too fat but I just can't seem to get my forearm elbow tucked in enough to give decent support

Yep, you and me too, Pauly!

Just too old and decrepit these days.....not that it ever felt comfortable, nor natural, even years ago.

No doubt those highly developed and specialised target stocks offering full control with their big, deep forends or hamsters would assist.

But because I came from a "sporting / field" background and hunted for many years, I have always preferred the sleek lines of a classic sporter stock. So, maybe we're settling for a compromise here, but I'm a happy bunny.

Another point to note :- The first time I have ever shot off a bench was back in May 2013, just before the first Bash, at an indoor range. Felt alien to start with. And then we get to the Bash, where many shoot from the bench. With many of my guns when shooting from a bench (and with the World-famous, patented Tigger Boinger Rest) I prefer to rest the gun right at the far end of the forend. Seems to keep them "flatter", less flippy, more straight line, recoil? And shooting standing, adopting the "sporter" stance replicates this forward arm position.

If I did competitions, I'm sure my views would be entirely different. But I don't. Nor have I hunted in years. I shoot purely for enjoyment / therapy / camararderie these days, so sporting stance it is.

    And you know what?.....

A hamster would help I guess but I'm definitely not going down that road practical but damned ugly. I'd like to master standing shots, maybe when I'm retired and have much much more shooty time. On my permission I use tripod trigger sticks (with PCP) which really helps and anything that helps perfect a shot on quarry can only be a good thing but it would be nice to lose them.

But, as you say Tone, it's all about the enjoyment and if I look like quasi modo when I shoot, as long as I can replicate that and hit a target... Pfffffft what the heck, I love it

I didn't see much of it, Phil, but from what I saw Federer was giving his opponent a right old hammering. Was he injured or summat?
