It would be great if the BBS starts hosting pics! I've been lobbying for it ever since the IMG tags were turned off in collectables soon after it started. Thanks Ed, for taking the plea seriously.

Re. the Photobucket problem, it doesn't help me much to say 'I moved away years ago'! I started building galleries eight years ago when there was no inkling Photobucket would go downhill the way it has, still less stupidly 'kill the internet' through greed! Maybe it won't happen in the end, but who can say?

Yes, it would have been good to have hosted my own web site and pics many years ago, but I didn't want the cost then any more than now - and I've not done it to make money or 'big myself up' in any way, so the galleries have kind of grown organically, based on the generosity of those who supplied the pics. All I did was posted them in some sort of order.

Anyway, if I can't crowdfund the money to pay the current Photobucket extortionists, my galleries may just wither and die, which would be a shame but not the end of the world. It's up to the worldwide vintage airgun community collectively if they want to save them!

If Photobucket reverses itself, I'll happily refund any contributions.

As some of you may know, Photobucket has finally pulled the plug on the 'third party hosting' of images

Thank god for that. Hateful program. Got so bad and ad ridden I stopped clicking on links to it.

    Imgur all the way.

Yes, but Photobucket was fine for 'third party hosting' - embedding images in forums etc. Imgur is fine now, but so was Photobucket once...

I see nothing wrong with Danny asking for some help here, it's the logical way to fix this. Eventually no service will be free forever, real world. Danny's gallery was been awesome in helping this new collector see images I would never have seen in any other way.

Thanks Steve. It's not from choice, believe me.

If ever there was an opportunity for the BBS Admin to do the right thing by airgunners, this is it.

Where are you Messrs Ramsbottom, Doe et al?

Not sure what you mean by this, Paul? Mr Ramsbottom has said on another thread that the BBS is planning to carry images soon.

Looks like Imgur is going the same way as Photobucket. It reminds me of something I once heard which is that if it's free on the internet, then you are the target (ie. your information etc is the source of revenue one way or another).

PS. that can't be said of my galleries.

    Thanks both for the advice.

I've decided that for my part there won't be a 'long haul' because life is just too short to upload all the pics again! If anyone else wants to do it, I will supply the pics and any other assistance I can. It will have to be on a non-profit basis though, since most of the pics were donated on this understanding.

My hope is that in time Photobucket's business model will have to involve a big drop in the charges because competition will drive that outcome. This may not happen for years, of course. There are probably millions of 'captives' in the same boat and screwing your customers for a ransom each year is not a sustainable model!

I have put a description of the current predicament here.

There have been a number of useful alternatives posted here for Danny to consider, but in the meantime I believe it's important for us to fully support the donation request to allow time for any future changes to be properly evaluated.
