Just as Jezza said about cars, to be true petrol head you must have owned an Alfa, to be a true springer fan you must have owned an 80, in the eighties.

My first car was an Alfa,,,,, my 80 didn't fit in the boot
if it was an alfa sud you could have just poked the 80 barrel out through the rusty rear wing

Ah well, if we're going "self-contained", then it would be my Benjamin 392.

Don't laugh but mine would be my Webley hawk mk2 , owned from new for 40 years, modified to death to make it better than crap.

I am thinking more of a one time purchase to last a lifetime. A just in case rifle.
You can spend thousands and still miss a barn door or spend just enough and enjoy yourself. If you haven't got the talent to start with a million pound won't fix it. Whippet, Russell, a few bang sticks and a flat cap. http://www.smart-tech1st.co.uk

Well, putting it that way, Rob, and reading "survivalist" rifle into it, that'd be the HW80, then.

Surely that would be the Umarex Wildlife?

If the Q is pick the best springer ever, it's the Mach1 or 2, or some other Venom contraption, or maybe a Whiscombe.

In tin foil hat weirdo prepper mode, I would want something very well made, not too heavy, and probably with a leather piston seal (as they last forever and can be revived, whereas at least some of the synthetics seem to degrade over time). Think Diana 35, Webley MkIII, that kind of thing. (I'm assuming that a Bren gun and a Glock 17 are out of scope - but they do both have springs in them.)

In that scenario, I am 100% with you: HW80 all the way -- although I would still stick with my favoured cal of .177 and would look for the K carbine model, too.

If I could only have one Springer it would have to be a DIana 460 magnum and this is why, what other gun mentioned can match it for fac performance and be sleeved to shoot nice at low power, light weight and can be customised with a prosport/airsporter type lever,
A one piece compression tube and a robust build.
What other springer can match these qualities
