    .32-40 loads?

Anyone out there loading for a .32-40 with IMR3031?

Resized some brass and going to put the rifle on my FAC this weekend and load some ammo to try next week.

Got some 170 grain flat nose round head bullets and got the dies set up to go crimping the brass in the right place etc...

Just need some data. Got a few loads I have found but wondered what others were using if they are?

Are you shooting this in a single-shot rifle or maybe an older Marlin underlever?

Sorry that I can't help you there with IMR3031 and 170gr bullets.

170gr flat nose load is usually Accurate Arms 5744 and 20gr for 1802 fps. THE load is 40gr of FFFg BP.

Got lots of data for the lighter bullets though - can't you whittle 'em down a bit?

It will be an early 1900's Winchester.

    32/40

With 170gn jacketed, Lyman manual shows 25gns of 3031 producing 1512 fps....I shoot 170gn cast lead in Winchester 1894, 32/40. 14gns of Vit N110 . Anything for cast in 30/30 will probably suffice, same case capacity. However since you are shooting an antique, do not push it. Light loads would include Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique powders...7-8 gns. I use cast sized at .323, gas check and lube. Lyman M die to open the neck for seating. I assume you have remodelled 30/30 cases since 32/40 cases are just about unobtainable. I also found 16gns of N120 very accurate in 32/40 .

    32/40Winchester 1894

Despite the warning on loading an antique Winnie, I have found the originals to be far better made than the modern AE versions. I have two long barelled jobs from 1896, actions tight and smooth...nothing like the sloppy modern. AE versions. I think that Miroku make the current versions and these will probably be very good. Will not be in 32/40 however!

    32/40 Winchester

If you are shooting one of these then you should really get the book, Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West by Mike Venturino. He has a short chapter on the 32/40 and lists a 26 gr load of IMR3031 behind a 170gr f/p Speer JSP to give 1636fps with a 63fps variation.

    Hope this is of use.
