Bottles not filled enough

Went to a airgun shop in Blackpool today (i'll mention no names) to get my 300bar 7ltr bottle filled. Got home, put the whip on, blank end on tested it, 280bar.
Doesn't that piss you off.

I have noticed that I get less of a fill from my local dive centre than I do from my favourite RFD

when a bottle is filled it warms up and the air expands. when the shop fills your bottle they have to stop filling once their gauge reaches the working pressure of your bottle. you bottle will then cool and the air will contract so will read lower on your gauge when you get home also there may also be a few bar difference between your gauge and theirs

the way to combat this is to fill bottles really slowly

Spot on. Best advice is to let them fill and then get them to recheck and top up after 10 minutes if you think they've filled too quick

more annoying is when you have a perfectly working cylinder, no leaks etc, they send it off to have its pillar valve serviced because it is a due or something, then It comes back leaking


you can try to ask them to leave it connected longer while you shop around, to top it off just before you leave.
they may not listen though

there are some quite good Chinese compressors out there for 2-300quid, and no more worries about the need of having periodic tests on cylinders etc.

The one I use in Stockport does the whole job in about 5 minutes, . I have really only had one good fill from them in the last 18 months. The last one they did was abysmally short and after about 20 fills, 7 litre bottle and 150cc cylinders, I need to return the bottle. The only good point about them is their proximity so very little petrol money and time is invested getting to them. I know of people who have to travel over 40 miles to get to a fill station. I guess 280 bar in a 300 bar bottle is not bad going at all. With hindsight I should have bought a 12 litre bottle as it would have been more economical.

I waited while the bottle was filled, that was my mistake, as already said, wait for the bottle to cool then ask to check and top up.

A full bottle is necessary today with guns that require a fill of up to 230bar. That short fall of 20bar is quite a few fills on the smaller tubes of my BSA Goldstar and Scorpion.

They seem to fill the bottle more slowly and often in a cold bath to help with the heat build up.
Their filter will be spot on too .

Its still a good idea to have your bottle regularly tested even if you own your own compressor.

Thats my experience to. Perhaps that is because lives depend on it not just a missing 10 shots.

I find if I leave it at my local specialist diving shop and pick it up the next day its full.

There is a reason why periodic testing is mandatory........

Getting your bottle filled while you wait is a bonus, if youlose a 20 bar set that off against the cost of a return visit.
If you leave your bottle and go back to collect then itshould be at 300 bar.

Before it closed..my local gunshop used to put the bottle into a bin full of water to keep it cool and also top up after waiting 15 minutes or so.
