Thank you for the information, am having a think. Tried a few things, tap washer, stick on plastic cabinet feet!!
I can not put up a picture as the seal has literally broken up into small crumbs of light brown ????
It is difficult because there is not enough to even guess at a pattern.
I will come back in a bit after further thinks.
    Cheers all.
    Geoff.

    Crosman 22xx Seal

As ped says - a common Crosman 22xx series cart seal - from any online supplier - if oversize to your S&W simply reduce the diameter down on sandpaper to make it fit .

Hello thanks to Baz, and all. I did eventually manage to make one but will order a 'propper' one, the crosman one seems to fit the bill.
It has a most parculiar piercing arrangement ( well it is to me) a brass coloured washer with a dome in the middle which has a number of claws. The piercing pin (which is solid) fits through the claws, this rests in a recess in the face of the valve, a hole offset from the centre line of the face goes into the valve chamber.
The seal fits over the brass washer with a hole for the pin. There is a retaining collar for the seal. The shape of the seal is a bit of a guess because there is hardly anything left of the old one.
Sorry for the delay in any replys,
had to finish rebuilding the lathe,
    had 2 power cuts,
cul-de-sac with 3 bus size vehicles due to inpending sewer collapse.
    All quiet really!!
When it is completed properly will pop back.
    ATB.
    Geoff.

The Crosman seal will be too small as the S&W one is over 13 mm in diameter identical to the clear one shown in the pic I posted on this thread. I asked the OP if the seal has a screw in retaining ring as he may be able to use the common orange coloured Umarex doughnut shaped one used in their pistols as it is only a tiny bit smaller in diameter (PW056 at Chambers). When held in place the capsule neck should seal OK.

so it uses the flying saucer seal from a 1077 and a few other older crosmans and was the reason I asked if it was self piercing or you shot it to pierce the cart
