    Nikko Stirling Panamax 3-9x40 Ir

I have plenty of scopes including leups, bushies and few old school WTC's
For the money, this little nikko gem is unbeatable.

I've got a Tasco Varmint Target 2.5-10X42, gonna have a go with that decide if the discipline is for me (& I think it will be), once I know what's what i'll invest in a scope for the purpose, The Tasco has decent optics, mill dot recticle and target turrets so should provide a starting point and was cheap enough (read very) to use on one of my hunting rifles when I upgrade.

Thanks all for the info it's given me a few options to explore, I think now I need to get down there and shoot some targets

10x42 is pretty much ideal starter.
    Good luck!
