Have a look on google about using coffee or tea as a stain.
That's about as cheap as you can go.
Failing that a small pot of wood stain.
Is it bare wood? If it's bare a coat of oil should darken it a bit, if you get the wood wet with either water or white spirit that should give you some idea of what it will look like.
True oil on a beech stock. Top stock is a HW99s beech stock.
If there is a butt pad on the stock. Remove it and the end may be unfinished. Try your oil on it but be aware it may go darker due to it being the end grain.
Good thing as no one will see it if you don't like it.

THIS was light coloured walnut, My mate wanted it darker so he bought som stained oil and rubbed it on!!, It may be a bit dark for most tastes (Mine included!!) And I was going to remove it and refinish the stock but to be honest, I just can't be bothered so it'll be staying as is!!!
I'll see him at work this aft, I'll ask him what it was called as they may have different shades of the stuff!!

Whatever you do, you will have to strip the old finish. Alkanet oil will add more depth to the colour and darken a bit, whilst still looking natural.
Google Ammonia fuming.
It really works and it's cheap. You can buy Ammonia online but be careful with it.
When I die don't let my wife sell my guns for what she thinks I gave for them!!!
