That's strange as the Mercury S and Airsporter S I have, both where jammed up with alloy heads and a massive space where the buffer washer used to be, so I think it's the whole range that suffered

You are correct but the old crumbly cheese buffer washer is the main culprit on the later models, that's why I always strip mine as soon as I get them to see what they are like inside, however good they look like on the outside.
