I always write 12ftlb.
But does it really matter if its understood.

To be honest you could write any number under 12 and word on a UK forum and people would understand.
My rifle is shooting 11.7 bananas.
My rifle is putting out 11.7 daffodils.
My power went up to 11.7 puppys.
With these new pellets it went up to 11.7 Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch.

Thanks chaps (err I think ), will stay as I am then, quoting 12ft.lb if it is just a minor question of semantics -- although am sorely tempted to follow Murphy's lead, and start referring to twelve bananas per penguin lol.

Even if your assumption is correct, it's still not right.
None of the above carry the units - or are recognisable symbols - of energy.
In these days of dumb celebrity it may be trendy to appear careless but that doesn't make use of nonsense units right either.
On the other hand, the use of 'fpe' for Energy does at least imply the correct units (Foot Pound Energy) as long as you make the assumption that folk understand what the 'F', 'P' and 'E' stand for.
Seems to me that it would be better to use the proper (Ft.Lb or Ft.Lbf) units in the first place since that's what extracting the units from ½.m.v² gives us.

Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.
