    Spring breaking during 're dressing

Needid to reduce a springs length today.
Used my dremil to cut to desired length ,heated until red closed end coil .
Used the dremil to flatten the end carefully then a file over the whole base coil to get a flat even base before using stone and wet n dry before a pollish up

Using the file the spring broke on the coil bellow.

Never happened before, I'm sure the process was correct .
Why did it break ?. Was a used spring looked fine ,no big bend
    Confused .com.

You did let it cool naturally I take it? If so it could just have been a natural weak part of the spring.

    Spring

Probably cracked when it was overly long, was it a OX spring as these seem to readily crack due to the
    square section localising stresses .

Could have Been long once I guess but it looks to been a genuine hw spring 15+ internal dia from a 80 I guess.

The steel was very hard ,in fact I thought it felt much harder to finish than those I did previous.
