Thanks Russ,
The main street in Rawtenstall where I live is called Bank Street - probably due to the fact that just about every bank had a branch there, and with good reason, as this is a very busy market town that has a lot of small industry that chooses to bank in the Rossendale Valley's principle town.
We still have an unusually large percentage of banks for such a small town - and plenty of building society branches too - but surprisingly the HSBC (previously known as The Midland Bank) have chosen to close their Rawtenstall branch, despite it always being very busy and with a strong turn-over - much to the bewilderment of the staff who have worked in other branches in the region and have reported not being anything like as busy as this one!
TSB built a new bank just a little further up Bank Street not so long ago (!), so there is obviously still a demand for local banking and this would appear to offer absolutely no logic as to why HSBC closed this particular branch.
We had a new Post Office open next to the sorting office in Kay Street not so long ago (this is also always very busy) - again making the HSBC decision to close this particular branch even more difficult to understand as most of the local business needs a local branch to work with and most have chosen to switch their accounts to rival banks.
Somethings just don't make any sense!
