    Hi Russ,

After cutting some round bar "supports" to the ISSF dimensions (I was lucky enough to find some chrome plated 50mm bar to cut them from so they look very posh) we had our first go at supported shooting with a rifle last night.

I also cut some from 50mm diameter alloy tube - this is much easier to work with when using hand tools! - and that worked just as well.

Various types of stand were produced and "mocked-up" - all holding the 50mm bar to rest on - and by the end of the evening we concluded that whatever method you choose to hold the "bar support" at the correct height does not matter much (as long as it complies with the rules shown here) so it enables a fair bit of "free thinking".

Making a stand is possible for those that have some metal working skills but we also got very good results mounting the bars on tripods as well as various "clamping on mounts" ideas, so it looks like anyone can knock up a suitable stand and I expect we will see all kinds of ingenious solutions for holding a short length of 50mm diameter bar at the right height - many of which may be a lot more professional than ours!

We found that shooting in the standing position (we are not 71 years old yet) to be a real challenge as the shock absorbing qualities of the human body are lost and balancing the hard under-surface of the rifle on a hard 50mm diameter cylinder is not as easy as we thought it was going to be!

The tangent formed between hard underside of the rifle and the hard surface of the 50mm diameter cylinder gives a very small contact area leaving the rifle free to move (wobble) in all directions making rifle control and trigger release as critical as it is when free standing!

Please accept two entries for the MPL Supported Rifle:-

    Paul B.(bart49) Hebden Bridge
    Bob S.(zooma) Rossendale.

We will make the payment directly into the RMTC bank account this week.

Lets hope we get some interest in this new MPL discipline - if we follow what we see happening in Germany then this could be a really nice event to take part in that could become very well supported (sorry!).

Another entry for MPL supported rifle was received last night so now we have 3 entries:-

    Paul B ( Bart49) Hebden Bridge.

    Bob S (zooma) Rossendale.

    Ray B (SoftTop) Bury.

This is our first MPL supported rifle competition and like a lot of new competitions it can take some time for it to gain support but this one is up and running now and anyone can join in at any time between now and when the competition ends at the end of June - so plenty of time left to let Russ (PhatMan) know you would like to "have a go" - it is well worth a try!

Hopefully by the time the next MPL competition starts in July we will all have a little more experience at this new supported rifle shooting and can use this thread to ask any questions and maybe to share some tips with each other so we can all learn together and share our experiences.

    Come and join us

We are just starting to shoot our first round (January) cards for the Supported Air Rifle MPL competition.

This has been slowed down a little as we have not assembled enough ISSF legal spec "rests" yet - but various ways of balancing the 50mm bar on a stand are being used for now!

We have come up with a good solid prototype "bar holder" made from plywood that works well, is easy to make, and can double-up as a rifle stand when not being used for supported air rifle shooting.

We are now going into the "production stage" and will make some more over the next few days so we can have one on each shooting point. Luxury!

Pictures of the prototype are available for anyone that may be interested in seeing the idea (and hopefully make one and joining this superb new competition)
