    Chrome removal

Is it possible to remove the chrome finish on a gun action so that it can be re-blued?

It can be removed by electrolysis, basically it's the reverse of the chrome plating process.

Possibly with media blasting but it may leave a less than smooth surface. There is soda blasting but i'm not sure if it can remove chrome. Soda blasting is baking soda so its not as harsh as grit or sand blast .

There may be a chemical that will remove it

    some ideas here https://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Chrome-Plating

Or you could cerakote it rather than bluing

RichardH maybe be able to advise.

The removal of the chrome seems straight forward I expect the nickel will be the problem

I stripped the chrome off motorcycle silencers years ago. Concentrated Hydrochloric acid will remove the chrome, but the nickel/copper layer is much more difficult. I used concentrated Nitric acid (nastier) to remove this, but the reaction produces Nitrogen Dioxide, a red-brown, denser than air gas. At low concentrations it is technically an irritant, but the aforementioned reaction can produce large volumes of the gas very quickly. But it does strip the plating without damaging the steel beneath.

As in the post above, just find your local chrome platers and ask if they can strip it back to metal.

I used to have motorcycle parts stripped at the local platers, they just used to charge me a handling fee.
