Pig in a poke Pt2 The internals. Information please.

Got the 55 in bits yesterday. Serial 80639 suggests 1960 so a lot younger than me and in similar nick.
Queries are i) should it be leather seal ii) is the piston modified iii) were all trigger blocks threaded for guide iv) will any other cocking arm fit ?
TP is 4.5 mm, bore 25 mm stroke 71 mm so should make power OK but may need TP throttling a bit if synthetic seal retained??

    Thanks for looking.

    Hi Jules.

The piston seal originally would have been leather --- your piston looks to have an adaptor on it.

As far as I'm aware you have the correct guide but your back block has been altered for a retained guide.

The cocking arm is the same as an early HW35 --- later 35 cocking arms have an anti click bulge in them.

    All the best Mick

I agree with Mick, though the piston looks identical to the one in my HW50. My HW55 has a very different piston, with two slots, and a large aluminium head that protrudes back into the piston and restricts spring room.

I'd neck down the hole that's been drilled in the trigger block, or make a spring guide to fit in it.

Personally, I'd be going with a new spring (yours looks kinky!).

Plastic TH, and steel spring guide fixed in the trigger block (seeing as somebody's already done the work machining it).

And sleeve down the TP to 3.2ish?... 4.5mm sounds a bit huge, doesn't it?

(I don't recognise the seals on those pistons of yours, Jim?)

I'd be starting a bit smaller at 2.5mm, Phil --- then you can drill it out bigger if needed.

Ah, interestingly small to start off with, Mick.

You won't Phil. Just a couple of thin PTFE temporary seals to see how the rifles shot with 70mm stroke.

Many thanks for the support all. I have a much later 55T so may have a peek inside just for curiosity.
On that note Jim what was the stroke before you went for 70 mm?

The early HW55 models did have a fixed spring guide ..
At a later date this feature was changed to the separate guide, not sure at what date that was done though?
I would remove the piston seal adapter and replace it with a leather seal as it should be.

I agree, think 4.5 TP would be problematic.

From memory, 65mm. My HW55 does have the fixed rear spring guide, and I'm guessing the one originally in yours was probably deliberately removed because it wouldn't fit inside a beefier after market spring.

Thanks again. Must get on with it! I'm suspicious about the trigger unit. Has wear consistent with age and pre safety frame with stop pin above main sear but
the sear fouls the slot in main cylinder so has to be depressed to unscrew the block. Read somewhere that early 55T had match trigger later became Rekord for 35??

I have to do the same with both my HW50 and HW55, Jules.
