    Your best hunting combo

After visiting today one of my hunting permissions for the first time since my brain surgery 3months ago, although I have 17rifles to choose from ( a lot of them are shite) I enevitably picked up my bsa ultra Mmc .177 tactical, single shot, topped with a Nikko Stirling 1.5-5 mre scope and bisley magnum combo. I only managed an hour before my legs started to buckle but managed two 46 and a 35yard head shot jackdaws in the cattle shed. I've used this little wonder for the last 4years on my four shoots bagging more than any other rifle in the last 40 years of hunting, including a 20 year hunting ownership with a rws45 and only beaten by my 3shot semi auto shotty in my land fill pest control days. From a 10 yard rat (last week) to two 64yard Maggies last year (same tree) to a 110 jackdaws in the last 13months and rabbits and woodies and squirrels, the ultra is clinical and probably the best hunting combo for me. It's light but has enough weight for steady standing shots, mega accurate barrel, lovely trigger and near limit power, virtually silent to cock, when you catch the probe on release, very quiet discharge with my porky moderator, enough shots/fill for most hunting outings. The scope though sadly discontinued suits the gun well and has been on top since buying the gun.
What's your best hunting combo and why?

Glad to hear your getting out and about Peter. For me in sub 12 I love my Gladius in 177. Topped with a Nikko Sterling Panamax 3-9x50AO it might be on the heavy side for some, but I love it. Most of the time it is configured for ratting with the Nitsite Viper attached but occasionally it gets out for a day on the pigeons. Now in FAC the Galatian in 25 brings a smile everytime it goes out. Fitted with a Nikko Sterling Panamax 4-16x50AO it goes out more than anything else. In good conditions it works well out to 120 yards.
You can spend thousands and still miss a barn door or spend just enough and enjoy yourself. If you haven't got the talent to start with a million pound won't fix it. Whippet, Russell, a few bang sticks and a flat cap. http://www.smart-tech1st.co.uk

I've never found any hunting rifle to outclass the Ultra as an all round hunter. I have 2 here (mine are the SE's) . One probably 4 maybe 5 years old now, bought from new and never touched, the other recently fitted with a Huma reg just because I could. Both are .177 single shot and both perform well above their weight considering the cheap price of the single shot. Both responsible for many many rabbit stews.
As for the kit on them, both are fitted with HW mods ,both have BKL mounts, one has BSA essential scopes, the other has a Yukon mounted for night. Even though they are light weight, both wear sling studs for use with a sling in the field (like a 3rd hand when you need it).

I must admit, I'm in the Ultra camp we're hunting is concerned. I stupidly sold my Ultra se multi in .22 a month back now on the lookout for another I do however have a single shot mmc in .177 not got round to using it yet, but going to give it a good workout at the boinger bash next week, then it will be coming to the farm with me.
I love the AA S200 for hunting, but imo the excellent Ultra just pips it, I just love the compact size and accuracy of them

I was hoping someone was going to mention the little S200 it punches way above its weight, and of course the S400/410 to be honest I'm just an A/A lover, have never felt the need for much else, but I do like the look of the little ultra, might get one in the future, I have a spare mamba lite that needs a home. Currently I love my HW100kt with a BSA 6x24 scope on . A little heavy for some but I've started using Primos trigger sticks and the combination is great for me .
Previous favourite would have to be my AA410 carbine with a L/H walnut stock topped with a Simmons whitetail classic 1.5x5x20 with a HW silencer . I regret trading it in , but i used it to get my first HW100.
Another excellent bit of kit was my AA s200 .

I have a Bsa ultra se,but have put the 325mm cylinder on my one and have doubled the shot count.
It's still compact and the slight weight increase is better for me.
I have just sold my R10 and Hw100 because I prefer my ultra.
If I need a pcp for a hunting trip the ultra is my go to rifle.

For me, it's the HW100 - I'm on my second one now and, they've always been slick and accurate, they've never let me down.
It's the rifle that I have the most confidence in when out hunting.

This one's a full length .177 sporter with an Airmax 3-12x50 so, it is heavy but, with a sling, it's fine for a walk.
Around the woods, most shots are taken off hand, against a tree. For bunny sniping, I've usually got the Primos sticks.
Likewise, when hunting with the Viper attached, it's with sticks.

The A&M cylinder helps to distribute the weight better and, stops it from feeling so heavy.
The Marksman silencer, although on the large side, does it's job better than any other that I've tried.

My favourite pellet for hunting is JSB Heavy. For a heavy pellet, they still get a move on, compared to larger calibres.
I've spent a lot of time with this one at the range in the past, mapping out the reticle and, I've even done ok in a couple of HFT comps with it.
Wether it's rabbits, squirrels, pigeons or rats, these get the jod done nicely with a definite crack.
Sure, I've had pass-throughs but, the initial hit and the resulting wound channel has always given the desired outcome.

Pride of ownership also comes into it - I managed to convince my RFD to swap stocks from another rifle when I bought this - I think it's one of the nicest bits of walnut I've seen. The grain has clear light and dark detail throughout and, the vertical tiger striping covers the entire stock from front to back, both sides.
I'm always glad it's mine when I take it out of the bag.

    All of the above.

For me it was my nephews HW80 in .22that wore a Edgar brothers 6x40 scope that I borrowed for a few months.

Took loads of bunnies with it.

Was gutted when he asked for it back.

Will get my own one day.

I don't hunt these days, but when I did my Venom tuned HW80 Mark I in .22 was my favourite.

    Still have it now.

Single shot BSA bolt action Ultra .177 with Hawke 4-14x50 Vantage, Weirauch moderator and 4.53 JSB Exacts.

    Supreme.

It's also my NV rig hence the Hawke scope. Otherwise I wouldn't use a Hawke lol. Too many bad experiences with them.

Back in the day, a Theoben Countryman Carbine with a Nikko Stirling Platinum 6x45 and 7.9 grain Premier. Today, the 99s, Simmons 1.5-5x32 and RS. Both exceptionally accurate, a joy to use and real bag fillers...
