    Magpie deeks

Has anyone a view as to the best type to buy please. Are the posh flock covered ones worth the extra or will anything black and white do the job? I've tried leaving a shot one down,,but the cats rag it to bits in no time

    Thumbs up

I always use the 'plastic' decoys, they look realistic and get them down. I also use food scraps, bin liners and empty sandwich wrappers alongside as well (which I always clear up afterwards).....

Thats a good idea,,,I hadn't thought of using bait like that. Thanks.

( It will match the current "fashionably distressed" look of the garden too)

Magpie deeks may fool you and me, but Magpies are way cleverer !!

    The owl might work.

Pizza boxes with some scraps in. Eggs in the spring. lumps of meat/fat. Someone said oranges, that was on here a loooong time ago.

Do a search, it's been asked many times.

I have a flappy owl but the crows dont seem to come that close to him

a couple of wagtails did and he was off like a shot after them no chance to catch them though cos its a bit like a B52 chasing after a pair of F16s

Half a dozen slices of white bread works a treat - even better with a freshly shot maggie on its back in the middle of the bread. Had five in 20 minutes the Sunday before last! The first one came after the bread, the others just went mental pecking at their "fallen comrade". My one cat sat by feet and watched the whole proceedings (he prefers fresh rabbit or squirrel!).

something springs to mind about a slit open rabbit; they don't move about.

regards mag deeks; should think the ones with wings spread would scare them, had moderate success with un-flocked plastic ones. think the flocked ones to high in contrast. but then i no bird

    Magpie deeks

I use the small flapping Owl, couple of plastic magpie deeks and a 35mm film canister with about 25 BB shot given four rapid shakes, at intervals, this believe it or not supposedly imitates the maggie!! Thing is it actually works, for me anyway, listen for an answer (from the maggie) then repeat above. Warning!! you,ll look and feel like a right prat, but like i said it works. A mate makes a false nest in which he puts hens eggs and puts a large owl deek close by he reckons this works also, personally i think the men in white coat will be knocking at his door one day soon.
One things for sure, the less Magpies there are, the more song birds you,ll see.
