    Sandbags

It ruins the leather, did you add talc to the sand? and which sand did you use? quartz heavy or just silica/silver sand?

Better IME is fine plastic pellets for cordura bags.

Back in my bench rest days I was advised to use a special sand, can't remember the name but it was heavier than the normal stuff and black in colour.

    packing?

I have no interest or knowledge on bench rest, BUT back when I used to shoot 3 positional, we stuffed the kneeling rolls with bird seed.

I used dried Silver sand in mine and it's been fine from day one.
