if your bore is spot on .45 you will need a .440 ball and .010 patch,
30-40gr to start, No 11 cap if its a percussion,
I found lubed patches to be better, but with a smooth you will get away with either,
if that is a loose fit ,up the ball or patch size till you get a nice smooth, not to tight load,
good luck
T,
+1 works for me
If it's smoothbore, then it's not a rifle, by definition. Can you tell me a little bit more about it? I've not come across a smooth-bored Hawken-style firearm before.

I have a smoothbore kentcky style shotgun made by armisport, it can be quite accurate for a smoothbore if I do my bit.
I have a .60 smooth-bore Hawken,
shoots well out to 50m and is a great piece of fun,
but if you want to shoot comp or distance,
its back to the .45 or.50 rifled,
