Erasing the stamping on an HW breech

Evening all. I have an HW98 barrel I'm thinking of adding to an HW80 project. Has anyone tried filling the stampings on the breech? I'm thinking of spatter welding the area, then dressing it all back to metal before refinishing. Has anyone else done it differently?

In crime novels this never works but what about solder would that be easier. Don't know if it would blue though.

I tried dremelling it out, went wrong and ended up with a slightly dished side to the breech block. That was one a HW95 barrel I was sticking on a HW85. RichardH polished the bejezuz out of it and did one of his spectacular re-blues on it so it wasn't so noticeable at first glance, but It Was There..

The barrels are all the same, its annoying they put the numbers on the side. Anything you do will probably show and spoil the finish though, won't it? Best to leave it alone or stick a '0' on the end to make it a HW980. Which is what it is after all... Or get an HW80 barrel and have a shroud like a 98's put on it, then sell the 98 barrel.

    What about chemical metal.
Not that I have tried it but it would fill the letters don't know about colour but maybe very carful black paint.

I thought that's the only reasonable permanent solution. I'm going to have a furtle with it next week.

Surely the heat will both distort & de-temper the metal

The block is just mild steel.

Venom used to weld the rear sight mounting holes up Weihrauch breeches.

depends how you want to finish it. If you are going to blue it, it might be tricky to get a proper match. Whatever metal you fill it with will more than likely be a different composition to the material of the action. Good chance they will blue slightly differently

Why be concerned by the stamping on the breech block?,as for attacking such a precise component with a mig welder .

I would tig weld it as the impurities from mig welding might make it stand out once blued.

I thought he was on about the breech not the block.
Maybe Venom used a water bath or heat block putty to dissipate the heat ?

I was just adding a note of caution
