Hi Guys,
Just purchased a HW98 and this is my first springer.
My question to you is please.....
What scope and mounts would you put on the HW98. I will be using the rifle for plinking and none competition HFT.
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the great sport of springer air rifle shooting.
The size of scope you use also depends on light levels so for general plinking either at home or on a club range you should go for something like a 3-9 x 40. The mounts can be either the single mount or twin mount types but whichever you decide on they should be just high enough for your scope to clear the rifle body. You should also use a 'scope arrester' to prevent the scope from creeping during recoil.
Your best bet would be to visit a local club range with a shop and have a chat to them cos most have used items for sale.
Good luck in your venture and shoot safely.
Got a Nikon prostaff EFR 3-9x40 ao on mine it seems fine and didn't break the bank. Good luck there's plenty of good scopes about.
There are many scopes out there that, specification wise, will fit the bill.
Zoom facility is always handy and parallax adjustment more than just useful.
The aforementioned Nikon would make an excellent choice. I'd also be having a look at the Nikko Stirling Panamax range and the Hawke Panamax and Airmax ranges. The Vantage IR AO scopes, with the etched reticles, also seem to be winning many fans.
Personally I'd prefer a 32mm objective, and no more than 40mm.
Be sure to try out as many as you can as our eyes all vary and different optics do seem to suit different people.
And I'd finish it off with a Sportsmatch one piece mount.

The Hawke airmax range are superb and the 98 does deserve the quality. I have a 2-7 x 32 on my 98 and its cracking. The only thing is both the airmax 2-7 x 32 and the 3-9 x 40 do not fit on a one piece sports match mount as the scope body isn't long enough
That's a shame, Mike, as when I could afford one the smaller Airmax was on the top of my list as a "must try".

The 2-7 airmax does fit on the bkl one piece mount
You won't have any problems with a set of sports match two piece double clamp mounts, I use them on most of my spring rifles.

You may find HFT easier with something capable of 10x. Half mildots are helpful too.
