Bought a 26mm item and sized it to fit a meteor, works well, very consistent velocities.

It was recommended to examine the compression chamber bore for scores etc, before installation.

I'd leave it be ...or service the existing leather seal if required
It won't be improved with a synthetic seal, if anything you'll loose some of the charm (and de value the rifle some if converted)

    +1 here.

It was designed for leather and works well with it.

The synth conversions of leather-washer air rifles fashionable in the 80s typically gave a harsher firing cycle, no greater power, and no improvement (often the reverse) in accuracy. Look at the HW35 - HW had to change the TP when they moved to a synthetic piston head. Older leather 35s converted to PTFE were, by all accounts, not good. File them in the same drawer as Ox springs.

These days I'm a great believer in not fixing things that aren't broken so, if the leather piston seals works, I'd say keep it.

However, in 1984 or '85, I fitted a PTFE piston seal in my Original 45, and had to significantly shorten the stroke to bring muzzle energy down to below 12 ft. lb. I later fitted a clip on PTFE piston washer in my HW77, and it performed flawlessly for eighteen years.

The HW35 with a leather seal is different due to its very short compression stroke, and depended, as Cardew discovered, on autoignition, fuelled by lubricant from the piston seal, and this worked most efficiently with a large diameter transfer port that delayed the onset of choking until said autoignition caused a pressure/temperature spike. When a synthetic seal was fitted, peak pressure and temperature occurred earlier, so favoured a transfer port that advanced the onset of choking, so it's diameter was reduced

Also fully agree with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", philosophy.

Re the HW35, Jim, Mick has also informed us in the past that the later models with the synthetic seals also have a slightly longer stroke, about 5mm I think he said.

When you were experimenting with the PTFE seals back in those glorious SAR days, I fitted a TR Robb PTFE seal to my .177 HW35. I didn't have a chrono back then. It did seem to make more power. The action also seemed much quicker. Accuracy was excellent and it absolutely loved the H&N Silhouettes.

But it did seem quite "snappy" and your trigger finger would ring after extended plinking sessions. I guess a violent piston bounce?

The HW35 was crying out for a longer stroke, Tony, and an extra 5mm would go a long way (or go even longer and call it the HW80).

I'm not 100% certain what causes trigger finger 'slap', though it does seem to occur when I've measured rifles with harsh post surge (eventual) piston landing. It could equally be excessive piston bounce acceleration, though, which I think is what causes scope creep.
