    Truncated cone .158grn bullet heads

    Hi,

I'm fairly new to reloading, I usually use semi wad cutting bullet heads in my Marlin lever action.

There's a lot of posts about reloading truncated cone head bullets.

Our range is indoors and only 25m, so we have to download.

Can anyone give me any info about truncated cone heads as I got quite a few with some s/h reloading equipment I recently purchased.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

    TC bullets

TC generally seen to be more accurate than RNFP by regular shooters of 357 at 50/ 100 yards....probably not much difference at 25 yards.

Yep, T/C 158 gn bullets are my go-to... for 25/50 yds I use 4.4 gn of Vhit 320 behind them.

At Phoenix last year i needed some more, so picked up 2 boxes of 500. When i got home i realised the bottom box was actually 158gn RNFP.

I tried some loads with them and i may as well been using a shotgun...!! ended up selling them to someone to recast.

I too have found TC to be greatly superior to RNFP for target loads at 25m - getting appx 700 fps with 2.9 gns Lovex D032 (formerly Accurate No2) in .38 spl cases.

I suspect that the RNFPs will work better when stoked up a little more.

    Bullet size

The bullet diameter might be more important than the shape...the Marlin 44mag has a bore stated as 430/431 but most of the commercially available bullets, TC and RNFP are at .429....in fact a box of TC bullets I got with a rifle measured at .428 for the majority. Best to have a few thou overbore size for cast.

The bc of TC cast and RNFP cast seems to be very little different. Bullet diameter and bore size might be more important.

Another vote for Truncated Cone here!

I use 4.8grn of N320 with a 158grn GM TC in my Uberti Winchester 1873. When I do my part and have a good day, this load will clover leaf at 50 metres.
