Static charge on pan, powder sticking.

Any tips on how to stop the powder sticking to the pan of the beam balance due to static? This is an issue with the new beam balance I have. It's a metal pan but never had the problem with the old Lee balance.

Ah right, I found I put a static charge on a pan by washing it and then rubbing it dry.

Letting it dry naturally solved the problem.

Try washing it in a grounded metal sink and then air drying.

We used to have problems with static charges building up on the bed of a plotter. Thoroughly washing it in fabric conditioner (or failing that hand soap) and air drying leaves a slightly conductive coating which dissipates the charge. It's worth a try.

Or just earth it

Could be that the new one has got rubber feet that insulate it &/or a plastic link insulating the pan itself.

Earthing will do nothing except in the condition where the static charge is itself referenced to earth which is almost certainly not the case here, and anyway there is no practical way to ground the pan without seriously upsetting the balance. The agate beam bearings are not very conductive.

Tumble dryer sheets will remove static charge. Old trick

Just rub the item with one of the sheets.

With time it will get a grey sheen from teh powder anyway, so will pack it in, but it is bloody annoying
