Yes,definitely use a viscous moly grease rather than oil before you reassemble.
Never,by the way, use a silicon grease!
Had the tap apart on my Diana 50 and wondered if it would have been better to use grease instead of oil to cover the tap when reassembling? Might seal better?

I coat the tap barrel with candle wax which seals the tap from leaks better than a more fluid substance will and the
tap glides round as smooth as you like .
This is what I believe BSA used on Airsporters :-

All the best Mick
That's the stuff we used to use on tapered ground glass burette taps - you will note the similarity.
I'm interested in the line "Increases clearances and tolerances on mating parts" - there's a suggestion there that you could use it to adjust the alignment of a tapered tap?
One thing is guaranteed - if you use this stuff, leaky taps are a thing of the past.

That's a very useful tip I'll try wax myself the next time I service a tap!
STP is quite good.
Hello to All,
In the days of yore, we used to use Apiezon N grease for burette taps (until they replaced the taps with PTFE versions).
Apiezon L was used on on the sealing flanges of desiccators.
These greases worked very nicely, but are scalpingly priced - ca. £100 for 50g of Apiezeon L, ca. £120 for 25 g Apiezon N !!
Have fun & a good weekend
Best regards
Russ
I use Christo-lube on virtually everything on my air rifle that needs it. Not cheap but recommended to me by a dealer, he didn’t sell it but said it was the best stuff to use.

If I don’t reply to your comments it’s probably because you’re on my Ignore list.
My small container of this product came last week, although UK product got my small amount very reasonably on the Bay in the US. This is a excellent product, really sealed the tap on my new to me Diana 50. Also used it on a bit of a sloppy bolt on a another rifle, that would turn when firing. Kept it in line with its damping properties. Very useful in your tool kit.
Flint,
Where did you get it? Did your Grease come fom Greece (sorry!)
Ok, thanks for that.
