It’s the crown, barrel or pilot error in that order.

If it’s a .22 bring it to Kempton and I will recrown it while you wait, it’s a five minute job with the right tool.

I think we can rule out pilot error. I have seen Nick shoot and he can do better than the 9" groups he reports with this rifle!

    What's the trigger like ?
I have had bad groups with a record trigger that was not set up very well but on the face of it seemed ok .
Admitedly 9" groups have to be the the barrel though.

Have you tried shooting some pellets in to water so that you can look for any type of damage caused during shooting ?
might give you a better idea of where to start looking.

Not specifically but in the light of previous responses and my own gut feel I'm pretty confident the barrel needs recrowning or chucking away. In any case the rifle is going back to the original owner.

On the other hand ....... it could be a fault with the sights in use....

Just a thought - another avenue to follow.

A perfectly reasonable point but not the case here. I have actually used 3 different scopes on this rifle with no improvement. I'm pretty convinced that the crown is the most likely fault.

Barrel might have a loos fit.
This happened to three older HW97's I know off.
My brother is the owner of one of them.
V-mach internals and suddenly it starts to spray around.
Corrosion loosend the barrel fit in the housing.
Cure we found was welding the barrel to the housing.
Problem solved. Can take pictures if needed.

Thanks for the offer but there is no problem with a loose barrel. It was one of the first things I checked as I once owned a HW77 where the barrel almost fell off and the barrel/cylinder was just junked. Repeated dry firing was the probable cause.
