    Hand pump questions

    Good evening all.

I currently have a 3l Bottle to fill my pcp's but am considering a pump.

is there a rough answer to how many pumps are required to fill a 280 bottle using a hand Pump?

Does it depend on which pump manufacturer you buy?

Is there a max pressure the pumps will go to.

Personally I would not like to fill a bottle gun with a pump. Guns with small cylinders ie AA S200/400K, BSA Ultra etc are pretty easy.

Gotta agree with dave above. Ive filled a few buddy bottles via a hand pump over the years and its a lengthy and knackering process mate. Best advice is to do fifty or so pumps, then take a break for a while let the pump cool down repeat this till its full. As regards how many pumps it will vary hugely depending on the pump being used and how efficient it is.

Most of the pumps I've used will pump up to about 150 very quick, Its after this pressure which ive noticed becomes the problem, A chap about 18 stone and arms about 4ft long should master it quite quickly. But no serious upto 150 bar is ok, after that is a ball ache.

    Avoid a pump

Get a twelve litre tank, you can always decant to the smaller one.

Apart from the needless physical exertion, you risk putting contaminated air in your gun with a stirrup pump.

    Thanks for the replies gents.

Im possibly moving abroad and was looking at whether I can do away with the bottle and the rigmarole that comes with it.

I don't shoot very often and probably won't in the future. Maybe once every month.
I'm quite a strong build (not fat, big boned as my mum would say when I was a nipper) so I'm sure I can deal with the physical strength required. But I'm not to keen if it will require half an hours pumping to get to 200 bar.

The smaller cylinder guns like the ones I mentioned earlier, only take a few minutes to top them back up

I’m not particularly fussed about a bit of moisture myself.
Yet to see a gun catastrophically fail due to using a pump.
    Ideal- no
    Usable and reliable- yes

    Most things have there place

    Most definitely

There’s a fairly big range of pumps on the market and from what I gather the best are the Hills Mk4 and the FX 4 Stage types.

Some cheaper offerings are ok but can be hard work.

Obviously be cautious if buying used condition as worn seals can make it even harder work.

Years ago I had the FX 4 stage that was fairly decent however I think the Hills Mk4 is supposed to be the rolls Royce of pumps and is mentioned to be easier to pump.

Not cheap granted but with spares available and 175 years experience making pumps I think that’s where my money would be going should I be in the market for one.

    Thanks

I had a look at the hills pump. It looks like a good option. I'm not too fussed about the cost.
I would rather pay more for a good quality piece of kit that works efficiently, especially when spares are available and the pump won't be obsolete in a years time.

Has anybody got any experience with these? Ideally whose got a 280 mfr that the fill with one of these pumps?

When I used a pump it was about 6 strokes to pressurise the hose up to match the rifle and then roughly 10 strokes for every 6 pellets fired with a .22, or 2 strokes per pellet fired in .177.

I did once pump a stealth bottle from 120bar, never again - top up every 20-30 pellets.
