This was a nice piece of timber. Not mine, one I worked on.

I have just sold my last "black" airgun. When I was younger I liked military looking stuff, but now I seem to gravitate towards blued steel and walnut, and I seem to be a sucker for anything with a lot of figuring in the wood. Am I just becoming an old git? I have been looking at the limited edition walnut stocked BSA Ultras that came out and some are truly beautiful but they seem to be massively variable in the quality of the wood. What is the best wood you can get on a production air rifle just now and does any manufacturer still select or offer an upgrade option?

Lovely job.
Most high end airgun companies seem to be using Minelli now. Heres a pic of my Scorpion SE in and Ultra Minelli stock. FX for a short while used Tirelli for their FX 2000 variants and those were hand checkered and finished. Some of the wood on the Turkish made airguns arent bad either, but the finish on them isnt great.

Yes, that ultra is very nice indeed. There are still some for sale at dealers, but they are kind of expensive for what they are because you can only buy them as a package. I wonder if they are just unusually small blanks that Minelli got in, maybe for shotgun use that have ended up gracing those ultras?
had plastic. several types of wood. i would love one made of holly. blinking expensive though.
the only thing i can find wrong is the nut on the steering wheel.
