    BSF Bavaria 55

I had a BSF as per title in the early 80's late 70's.
It was very well put together, the sort of engineering that would go on and on.
I don't hear much about these nowadays, are they still being used much I wonder.
Mine was a cracking hunting set up.

Ah John, after BSF was taken over by Weihrauch they added a few of their own parts and the 55 morphed into the BSF 55 New Model :-

After adding a few more Weihrauch parts the BSF 55 New Model became the Weihrauch HW85, which is still in production along with the HW95 which shares the same action.

So in a way the BSF 55 is still with us.

Lovely guns. Light, handy, poky. Not the most accurate (compare FWB Sport), but not bad and great barn and farmyard rifles. Well up there with BSA Mercurys and Webley Vulcans, only a decade or two earlier.

BSF 55/55D/lux & 60 - an acquired taste that takes some handling when fitted with a full power (Export ?) spring due to their light weight. Very well engineered but they shoot better at a slightly lower power. The trigger is not in the same league as a Rekord unit and on a par with the FWB Sport.

I have a B55 the build quality of these is often over stated,HW's of the period are much more robustly built. On the 55 I have I found the cylinder to be pinched at the point where the forward stock mounting lugs are welded to it.A synthetic piston seal solved the problem as the skirt can move as it passes through the pinched section of cylinder!

    B55

This rifle was the original lightweight short powerhouse that has since brought all other carbine types to the forefront of todays shooters. While the design is agricultural it was built to last for years and appears to have done so.
Interestingly all the BSF models are all based on the same power plant and the internals are interchangeable between models.

Pretty much sums up my take on them too. But no getting away from fact they are quirky and collectable.

The trigger unit and piston of early and late (break point ???) is not interchangeable. You have to use an early piston with an early trigger unit. Their weak spot is the cast alloy trigger housing which can be easily damaged during stripping if your not careful. One good tip is a modified safety pin will replace a broken trigger spring.
