I believe it's already illegal to release vermin &/or alien species back to the wild, yet many animal "welfare" places do it anyway.

I'm certain it's illegal to release grey squirrels into the wild once trapped/caught.

There is a licence, that allows grey squirrels to be released back into the wild, it has to be applied for every year, as it only lasts for one year

    Correct.
It's an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to release a grey squirrel as the act defines them as a non-native / invasive species.
Incidentally the same act that gives land owners the legal right to allow others to perform control work on their property i.e shooting permission

For anyone wondering the Animal Welfare Act 2006 also make it an offence to cause 'undue suffering' so if you fail to kill the squirrel quickly and humanely you're liable for a hefty fine.
There was an article a few years ago where the act was used to successfully prosecute someone for drowning a grey squirrel.
You have to shoot them, or dispatch with a blow to the back of the skull (or pay a vet to put it down, though there's little chance of that for the forum members here!)

Itr is an offence to release a non-native species into the wild. I do wonder if it is the most ignored law we have, millions of cattus felis owners break it every day with absolute impunity.

... and that logic would apply to dog owners and farmers.

Are farmers a non-native species then?

I don't see this as important on a national scale considering the tiny numbers of non indigenous specie this will effect if taken to a vet? Come on, I would put money on it most vets in the UK have only ever seen an odd Grey squirrel or Muntjac in there whole career.

The buggers. Do you think they're attracted by all that imported bird seed hanging off a tree of Asian origin?

I hope it doesn't attract Pheasants.

Get pheasants and sometimes partridge under my bird feeders but no grey squirrels up here only reds.
    No magpies either.
