Apologies for the terrible picture. The bolt is m3 and the hole is only 3mm deep.It will screw in but just turns forever. The barrel is at the bottom of the hole so I can remove that to run a tap through.
The problem is it has to be m3 as there is not enough metal to go bigger as it holds a small plate that has a 3mm hole that goes virtually edge to edge and fits flush to the part above.I've looked at helicoils but they seem to need a deeper hole to fit.
Any ideas or do i need to make an appointment for it with a 16 pound sledgehammer?
I found this on the bay item number:362623492694,would this work?

Use a helicoil & just cut it off flush or get it welded (ally can be welded) not much other option.

A trick I've used successfully restoring vintage motor cycles.
The old electric cables that where multi stranded, take a single strand of the copper wire, wrap it carefully around the bolt thread and gently screw in. Do not over tighten. never fails.
Someone said house work wont kill you, but I say 'why take that chance'

acts the same as a helicoil.

The thread repair kit you show should work .

    After re -reading your problem

    if i understand ....

The m3 thread in the hole is stripped ., but there is material around the hole to enlarge the thread .
You cannot use a larger screw because of the proportions of the metal plate that the screw secures .

A thread insert should work ok .

Those small threads are fiddly and you may need to trim the length of the actual insert .
remember that you will loose about half a coil when you snap off the tang so about flush with the bottom of the hole or just a little short .

Be careful not to create a burr. Careful grinding is better than snips

Don't be tempted to loctite , it should lock itself in the hole .

If you have 3mm depth available , you should get about 4 coils of the insert working . that should be ok for an m3 thread .

If you want to go with a larger hole and make an insert out of a bolt , M4 will not work as the m3 will break through the roots of the external m4 thread M5 is the next standard metric option .

I would save that in case the m3 thread repair does not work .
If you need a custom insert making , give us a shout .
