just use the pin as it's a push fit but don't fit the roll pin
when setting length I depress trigger when closing pump lever so no air is in valve
when correct piston should contact valve with 3/4"-1/2" clearance on the pump arm and tube

I am working on the assumption that as the pump arm does not hold in the closed position the piston is set too short. Would you agree or could there be other reasons?
Also is there an "accepted" length to start off at before slowly lengthening it?
Cheers

that's correct
you can poke a bit of dowel down the tube and mark it on the lever pivot hole then lay lever and piston out and roughly set it to that
