    John Knibbs replacement gas rams

Has anyone tried the bespoke gas rams John Knibbs offers on their website? I'm rebuilding a Gamo and it has been fitted with an aftermarket ram, which I believe is a bit too hot for UK use, so I can buy a 'one size fits all' Gamo ram or the bespoke offering from JK. I just wanted some opinion before parting with my cash.

I bought a couple of these but have only installed one so far in a .177 webley tracker. It works well and has been in the gun a few years. Only get about 9ftlb out of it in the tracker though. They look well made and basically identical on the outside to the old Theoben Rams.

I'd be sticking a spring in it, Mark.

Protek also have the rams on their site if you're intent on the non-boingy flavouring.

P.S.....If you're okay waiting a few days, I'll be bringing along a Vipermax with Welsh Willy Kit, courtesy of look no hands, to The Bash at the weekend for you to try.

    You won't want a ram.

Might hold you to that. BTW, where are the rams for sale on the Protek site?

New spring and guides against gas ram is pretty cost neutral, so considering a rammer as I have never owned one.

On the Protek site, click onto parts for "other makes" I seem to remember, Mark.

I just feel that spring power is more flexible and tuneable. And if you have a spring spare from many 25mm guns (and maybe others?), like a TX / 77, it's just a case of getting some guides made up matey.

Have you got it in bits yet?

P.S. If the original spring is okay that will do, too. You may need to shorten slightly if it's anything like mine, as it didn't have the original top hat.

Like what Tone says, stick a Welsh Willy kit in it, like you've already found out with the current ram, if it's over or under powered with the ram, there's not much you can do about it, as you can't adjust the power with a sealed ram (unless you have specialist equipment), I did a little crude test last winter with my rammed up Brocock Independent and put it outside in the cold for a while and then chronoed it and it had lost well over a foot pound of power, I then put it on the heater and chronoed it again and it had gained a lot more power, so using it in hotter temperatures could send the rifle over the limit if it's been set up for say 11.5fp in the winter, I've been told this can also happen with springers but I wouldn't say it would be as extreme as the ram, these are just my findings and I'm no specialist but others may disagree.

I'll probably be taking my ram out soon, when I get the time and go back to the WW spring kit.

Far too many rifles to list now, all mainly British but the odd pesky foreigner has snuck in

A rammer is just an itch I wanted to scratch really. I've tuned smk19's before (Gamo 440 clone), so know how sweet they can shoot. I took a plunge and ordered Knibbsy's bespoke ram for the .177 Hunter, so we'll see how it goes. I might even be able to bring it to the bash, if the postman does a reasonable job and I can pull my finger out to re-assemble it.

Tread carefully,I think the long stroke Gamo's are designed to produce well over the UK limit,in .22 at least.

Can understand you giving it a try, Mark.

Hope it arrives and you get it fitted in time for the weekend; I wouldn't mind a go if that's okay.

Fully concur. The .22 Vipermax of mine, pre-fettle, was so easy to cock and mild mannered (but extremely twangy) that one would have guessed that it was doing about 8ft.lbs. It was actually bang on 12.0 with Hobbies.

Now even easier to cock and doing 645fps with the Hobbies, so safely under, and you can cock it with your little finger.
