Who said anything about toys? We are talking about the ability to propel a much heavier shot , longer distances using very low amount of energy , and if the technology could provide some sort of crossover into " proper" airgunning.

I totally get what Countryboy is saying and id like to see more experimentation with these. Theres no reason to not experiment with heavier ball and different hop up designs and materials. I mean we had sabos, nato bullets and Prometheus which divided shooters. (Not to mention dustbins) I used to airsoft and found some guns surprisingly accurate but at longer ranges the light balls were really floaty with the back spin.
In our pellet guns we use rifling to aid accuracy and consistency, in airsoft the back spin aids accuracy and distance. There could be something there... I'm glad someone is still messing about with stuff..

Just had a thought, tiny little lead golf balls!
See ... great minds think alike. Control the spin and you could shoot accurately around corners. David Beckham eat you heart out.😂

Only instead of using a .25 pellet ( for example) a .25 ball ammo could be used achieving long ranges at very low power. What is the problem ????
No problem. I was just being facetious because you hadn't posted a link to the actual video you were talking about.

A link that is still notably missing.

Also the Hop-up is based on backspin stabilisation, which was in use over 2000 years ago. The only reason it's called hop-up is the projectiles are now so light the backspin causes enough lift to briefly overcome gravity when the forward momentum falls below a certain threshold allowing the projectile to rise slightly about 3/4 of the way through it's flight before falling onto target.

When using very low muzzle energy the biggest restriction is the distance the shot travels, backspin more than doubles the maximum range you can achieve. If range was not the biggest issue we would see rifled airsoft with accuracy comparable to cheap airguns.

Still not found the link in question and I'm not wasting any more time looking at the weekend warriors shouting about how awesome little plastic balls are. I played with airsoft when i was about 10, I moved on. I still have three airsoft pistols all rated around 1 joule which I purchased as toys back then at about £15-20 each. All use hop-up and all can just about hit a shed door at 30 meters.

At the end of the day it's a ball spinning on an axis perpendicular to the bore on the horizontal plane to gain additional range, not compatible with spinning concentric to the bore to increase accuracy.

What's the 2000 year old back spin you talk about?

    Trebuchets
Ancient siege weapons which used what's now know as Magnus force - Lift imparted by backspin disrupting airflow.

So the effect was used in ancient times, but not scientifically understood until about the 16th century.

Settle down, you'll have Donald hightailing it off to Stirling Castle to see if he can't dig up and retrieve the War Wolf.

I often drive by the fields in front of stirling castle, wondering what I'd find with my metal detector! A trebuchet would be a good find, bit of a dig though!
