I use what comes out the back stop.
Soft lead wouldn't be too good.
Fit is key.

45-70
HI TIM,
I use what comes out of the bank, but I put a couple of LBs of pure lead in so the alloy is not to hard,
as said size is the key
my 45-90 I size to .459,
45-70/60 is ,458
settled on these after many a trial,
lots of fun working it out for your rifle,
good luck,

Tim,
Have cast Postell in the past but now use a standard grooved Money bullet, for my 45-70, it drops from the BACo mold at 510g in 20:1 lead time (by weight). My 40-65 uses a 390g Money, again 20:1 lead tin and BACo mold
Both bullets work well with BP using SPG lube and a blow tube - don’t hold with wiping personally
For ref. paper patched I use prolate bullets but cast a bit harder at 16:1, have to wipe for these though.
Brgds
