    HW 45 Revisit ?

I’m loosely considering a “45” again after owning a 177 Silver Star some years ago.
I sold the said pistol really because I wasn’t using it at the time and somehow I didn’t quite gel with it although it was very well made, shot well enough and I liked the duel power option. It did diesel quite a bit though and I could never understand why a pistol of that pedigree should do that. It was probably one of the reasons I sold it being honest.
However..... As I said, I wouldn’t mind another, not a S Star or B Star but the standard model probably .22 Cal.
Should I bother, do they still diesel ?
Usage would be casual plinking in the garden.

I did just the same. Always had 177's, always sold them on.

Then last year I fancied another go as most of my shooting is with Air Pistols these days. Fancying a Hand Cannon I bought a 22. Best decision I made. It shoots smoothly and very accurately. I bought it off here- it's the older version without fibre optic sights. These are better made, overall, by all accounts.

Deiselling?- That's normal- don't worry about it. Makes no difference to performance. They all do it and is part of the charm

Arguably one one of the best spring pistols on the market but I didn’t seem to take to it.

Do it, John, you know you want it, sir, suits you sir!

Yes, I seem to remember you having a little play with mine when we were at the club once?

Didn't realise you had sold it.

I have a .22 but really want a .177 to go with it.

Dieselling? Yep, they all do it. And it smells awesome.

It can be eradicated. Jon Budd and others have fitted the Australian parachute seals to replace the PTFE standard one. Degrease, fit the seal, sensible re-lube and the dieselling's gone. But it won't smell the same!

I look forward to hearing of your exploits once you've got it!

    Nay-sayer

I tried one back in 2013 and decided it was not a nice pistol, I have never thought they looked particularly nice either.
Then I saw an older example for sale with custom walnut grips, and it really caught my eye. A little bonus was that it also came with a TbT tuning kit already fitted, making it quite smooth to shoot. Very little dieseling too.

Can't get enough of it now, won't be parting with it any time soon!
Too many guns, or not enough time?

Knew I could rely on you to encourage me Tone !
And yes, heard about Aussie seals and associated widgets !
I’ll have a ponder and think on.

Why do you want a .177 Cal. Any particular reason !

I bought my first '45 back in 1988, John. A .177. Loved that pistol. I can't remember why I let it go in the early 90s. Maybe as collateral towards another rifle? But I'd always regretted letting it go. When I bought my current one in 2010 I wanted a .177 again but HC were out of stock but they had the .22.

Nothing against the .22. But my back garden doesn't really allow for tin can mangling so most of my shooting at home is on paper targets so extra "oomph" and whacking power isn't a requirement. Cheaper pellet prices too. And I always seemed to get tighter groups with the .177. Probably just me, though.

I'll keep the .22 as it is and add to it with the .177 when funds allow. Storage is at a premium, but a little pistol is always easier to sneak into the collection undetected!

Why do they diesel so much and as they do, does the piston head or seals burn out frequently ?

Jon will be in a better position to advise, John, but I'd guess that it's down to too much of the wrong lube in the wrong place from the factory. That plus the shape of the seal offers no potential for scraping back any of that excess lube on the cocking stroke. However, as it's a diesel rather than detonation, I'd also guess that the longevity of the seal isn't adversely affected?

In the early days following its introduction, many advised to dry fire it a couple of times to "form" the seal, as some did with Webley Vulcans.

Probably a bit generously lubed at the factory.

Can't say I have experienced any issue with piston head burning.

I have a .22 version that I have owned since 1986 and it still shoots around 420fps with 14.5 gr pellets on original spring and piston head, only breech seal changed.

No dieselling at all now, just smooth and accurate.
People who have been there focus on the fundamentals. People who sit at keyboards all day focus on the trivial and inane.

That’s encouraging news. I suspect rightly or wrongly that a .22 will be a wee bit less violent and easier shooting so the dieseling may not be as pronounced ?
